“I Have Skin in the Game:” UW’s First Black Woman Professor of Medicine Works to Diversify Life Sciences

For Angela Byars-Winston, becoming the first Black tenure-track, full-professor in the UW-Madison Department of Medicine in September was just another stepping stone in her career.

As a member of the National Academy of Sciences Higher Education and Workforce Development Board, a 2011 selectee for the Obama administration’s Winning the Future initiative as Champion of Change, and a recipient of a  $1.4 million grant from the National Institute of Health to research the impact of diversity awareness on mentor-mentee relationships in STEM,  Byars-Winston has no shortage of accomplishments.

After UW-Madison climate survey results, campus reacts

For some UW-Madison students, last week’s campus-wide climate survey results were no surprise.

Survey data showed that while 81 percent of UW-Madison’s overall student population often feel welcome on campus, just 69 percent of LGBQ students, 67 percent of students with a disability and 65 percent of black students feel similarly.

Officials ask UW-Madison community to join in improving campus climate

Improving the climate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for underrepresented and disadvantaged students is going to rely on efforts in departments, classrooms and social circles around campus, officials told a luncheon gathering Tuesday at the school’s 2017 Diversity Forum.

UW campus climate report reveals minority students have less positive experiences than majority students

The University of Wisconsin released its annual campus climate report Wednesday, in which it detailed the results of a survey examining the social atmosphere at the university and posited recommendations to improve the campus climate based on these results.
