September 14, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Shah Mahmoud Hanifi (Professor, History, James Madison University). This talk considers the formatting evolution, intellectual ingredients and institutional context of the ethnic map of Afghanistan that was developed in stages in the 1960s and 1970s by American archaeologist Louis Dupree. Dupree relied upon multiple American and Afghan collaborators and the support of the American University Field Staff. The conclusion of the presentation considers how the ethnic map has framed and limited understandings of the cultural and linguistic complexity of Afghanistan.
